Customer Review: Convenience at your fingertips

Due to the small size of my desk (and my need for minimal clutter) -- that served as my basis for looking for a scanner with a small footprint. My needs other than that were minimal; I wasn't planning to scan photos or negatives, so actual pixel-by-pixel color accuracy wasn't a big concern. So having size as my primary restriction, I was left with only a few choices. Among them, it was primarily between Fujitsu and Neat Receipts. The form was considerably more expensive, and the latter, although in the same price range, seemed to lack in the usability department (from others' reviews).
As for the actual real-world usage of the Pentax DSmobile 600 scanner, I must say it's been a great addition to my gadget collection. My documents generally scan pretty fast, get directly saved into a PDF, and I'm done. I've had no need to use the OCR functions yet so I can't comment on those. But as for the size (small), and the lack of clutter (only 1 USB cable going to my computer) -- the product just fits the bill.
One thing that I have noticed is that since the paper is fed through by rollers, there have been instances where one size of the paper is fed into the scanner first, causing a mis-aligned output image. That's not much of a problem since it can be remedied by scanning it again, but it is sometimes frustrating when you are in a hurry to get something scanned and are naturally getting lazy about feeding the paper into the scanner optimally.
Description of Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner
This powerful, compact, lightweight 600-dpi color scanner is combined with dynamic software to provide exceptional quality scanning and easy management of documents and photos. The DSmobile 600 is a direct replacement for the DSmobile USB but provides higher resolution, high-speed USB 2.0 interface, and additional software that will enhance and simplify your scanning needs.Weighing in at less than 12 ounces and measuring just 11 inches wide, the Pentax DSmobile lets you carry around all you need to scan everything from a business card to an 8.5 by 14 inch document. The scanner draws power from its USB interface so no clunky AC adapter is needed. Bring it along with you and you can instantly transmit a printed page via email, fax, or the web. The scanner has a hardware optical resolution of 300 dpi and the included OCR software automatically converts the document to editable text.
The scanner uses a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) to achieve its smaller volume and lighter weight, and also requires less power consumption and lower maintenance than a traditional CCD. The DSmobile has few moving parts, which promotes high reliability and nearly maintenance-free operation. It consumes only 0.2 watt of power in standby mode and a maximum of 2.2 watts of power when scanning. The Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner is compatible with Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. It is backed by a 1-year warranty.
